THE JOURNAL OF AN EXISTENTIAL BELIEVER

THE JOURNAL OF AN EXISTENTIAL BELIEVER

‍ ‍

I started my career as a playwright back in the 90s. I soon progressed to directing my own work and then running my own theatre company with the help of some Lottery funding. I had some local success in the south-coast area of the UK and was spotted by Ken Campbell, the late theatre and TV maverick. I worked for him as a writer and sidekick for a while, until we fell out just before he made a TV series that I was supposed to co-write and perform in. I also had a publishing deal at the time with a small publisher for my first three plays, but I took so long to edit the manuscript that it never materialised. At the same time, a local TV station offered to make a sitcom based on two of my plays, with me as showrunner. So, I did that, but it was a disaster. After that, my showbiz career spiraled downward. I got into teaching writing, acting, and directing at the local college. Eventually, I had a breakdown. That’s what Beat Freak is about.  A few years later in the noughties, I got back on the horse, set up another theatre company, and staged some revivals of my old plays, including Writers’ Block. Then I wrote a one-man show and took it to Edinburgh. It got a little attention; I ended up doing a showcase gig at the Spitz in London with Rob da Bank, the DJ and Bestival organiser. That led to doing the Bestival and getting an offer to do more festivals the following year. Then I suffered a bit of an existential crisis and decided to start work on a novel. Cut to 17 years later, and I've finally finished it. Any semblance of a career as a writer and performer was completely shot in the foot by myself long ago, but I’m happily married with a wonderful family, living in the Philippines. That's about it in a nutshell.
